ARRESTED IN HOLLYWOOD
First, find out where your case goes
Hollywood is not a separate city. The Los Angeles Police Department lists it among the neighborhoods served by its Hollywood Community Police Station.
A misdemeanor DUI from Hollywood is prosecuted by the Los Angeles City Attorney. A case filed as a felony goes to the Los Angeles County District Attorney.
The papers you were given usually name your court and your first date. The DMV license action is separate, and its deadline usually comes first.
Our office handles both the court case and the DMV hearing. Our only office is in Los Angeles, at 3810 Wilshire Blvd.
HOW WE HELP
What your lawyer can handle for you
The DMV hearing request
The request must be made within 10 days of receiving the DMV notice. We can request the DMV hearing on your behalf.
The DMV hearing
At the hearing, you may be represented by an attorney at your own expense. The attorney can review the DMV’s evidence, subpoena witnesses and documents, and cross-examine witnesses.
Your court dates
In a misdemeanor case, a defendant may generally appear through an attorney. In a misdemeanor DUI case, however, the court may order the defendant to appear in person at the arraignment, plea, or sentencing.
5925 HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD
A courthouse that no longer hears DUI cases
The Hollywood Courthouse is at 5925 Hollywood Blvd. The court says the building was built in 1986 and handled misdemeanor cases until it closed in 2013 because of state budget cuts.
It reopened on October 21, 2019. The court’s directory now lists one case type there: mental health.
The court’s local rules list the Hollywood Courthouse in the Central District. Under those rules, a criminal complaint is filed at the courthouse that serves the area where the offense is alleged to have occurred.
We did not find an official list that matches each Los Angeles neighborhood to a courthouse. The court named on your papers is the one you must attend.
BEFORE COURT
The first month after the arrest
The license deadline usually comes before the first date in criminal court.
DAY OF THE ARREST
Read the court address on your papers
The papers you were given at release usually name the court and the date of your first appearance. Use the address printed there. Do not assume the case is at the Hollywood Courthouse.
WITHIN 10 DAYS
The license case runs separately
The DMV license action is separate from the criminal case. It concerns only your driving privilege. A DMV hearing is optional. The suspension takes effect 30 days after the notice is served.
FIRST COURT DATE
The arraignment
The arraignment is usually the first court date. The court can appoint a lawyer if you cannot afford one. A person in custody who is arraigned only on misdemeanor charges is entitled to release without bail. The exception is when the court finds that release would compromise public safety or would not reasonably assure the person’s return.
PUBLISHED RESULTS
Results at the Metropolitan Courthouse
Our Success Stories page lists 36 DUI cases at the Metropolitan Courthouse, from 2009 to 2024. It is one of the two Central District courthouses listed on this page. In 35 of the 36 cases, the DUI charge was dismissed and the client pleaded to a lesser charge. In 26, that charge was a “wet reckless.” In nine, it was exhibition of speed. A wet reckless is a reckless driving conviction entered with a statement that alcohol or drugs were involved (Vehicle Code 23103.5). It still counts as a prior if there is a new DUI within 10 years. In the other case, the court dismissed all charges after a six-day trial ended with a hung jury. The five most recent results are shown here.

DMV Driver Safety
The license case is not handled at the courthouse. A DMV Driver Safety hearing officer decides it.
To get a hearing before the suspension takes effect, ask within 10 days of receiving the DMV notice. The notice is usually given at the arrest. The DMV lists a Driver Safety phone number, (833) 543-7703, and an online Driver Safety portal. Hearings may be held remotely or in person.
